GENERAL INFORMATION FOR STETTEN FELLOWS
III. In Your First Week:
Insurance and Getting Around Campus
Early on, you will need to take care of health insurance. This page also contains information to help you learn your way around.
1. Insurance
You must have health insurance in order to work at NIH, and it must be in place before the first month of your appointment is over. Start the process early. Insurance is offered by the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences. You will need to turn in your forms in person at the FAES Business Office:
FAES Business Office
Building 10, Room B1C18
(301)496-8063
Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m
Be sure to complete your enrollment before canceling any other insurance you may have. You must be enrolled during the first 30 days of your appointment. You should receive your insurance card within 21 days of enrollment; if not, contact the FAES office.
2. Getting around campus
The main campus is large and often confusing to newcomers. At first, just figure out how to get to your parking lot or the Metro stop, your office, and someplace to eat.
Click here for the main employee map. It's recommended that you print out the PDF version and carry a copy with you until you become comfortable navigating
Where to Eat: Campus offers several cafeterias, lunch stands, and snack bars.
Fellow Tip: "Fellows
often lunch with the Office of History, to get a chance to relax
and catch up on business."
Shuttle Buses: Free shuttles run on eight separate routes
through campus. There are also shuttles to the Parklawn building
(FDA headquarters) and the Frederick Campus of NIH.

Bus Page.
Fellow Tip: "The shuttle
buses are time-consuming, but nice if your feet hurt or if it's
raining."
